Interlaken Information
INTERLAKEN, located between the two Lakes of Thun and Brienz and at the foot of Eiger, Mönch & Jungfrau. Interlaken offers a great notch excursions and activities for both young and old. The choice of adventure sports, cultural entertainment and shopping for suviniers is just as impressive as the incredible landscape - in summer and in winter! You can take advantage of FREE travel on bus and rail within the regional public transportation zone with your Interlaken visitor's card!
Interlaken is an ideal starting point for countless excursions. Over 45 mountain railways, cable cars, chair lifts and ski lifts lead to 200 kilometers of pistes and a dense network of hiking trails. Excursion ships, including historic paddle steamers, ply the waters of Lake Thun and Lake Brienz.
The Interlaken area is comprised of 3 villages; Interlaken, Matten and Unterseen.
Matten
The borders to the community of Matten are just south of the Höhematte. The village still features some traditional farm-style chalets. But it is also the center of the 'trendy' adventure sports community. Hostels, hotels and booking-offices line the main road. The Mystery Park is also part of the community of Matten.
Matten has excellent bus links, a well stocked supermarket, large shopping mall and is only a quick walk from Interlaken.
Interlaken
Interlaken is the Hoehematte, A large green field wih unrivaled views towards the mountains of the Jungfrau region. From the Hoeweg is the famous view of the Jungfrau and has a wide promenade with shady trees and restaurants . The cultural focus point is the Kursaal, renovated several times since it was built in 1859, with its magnificent garden. Just behind the Hoeweg is a stunning walk along the Aare between two train stations. The Station for the Harder is also located on the Aare river just beseide the Ost train station. Walking maps and information are available fromthe inforation center, located at the base of the Metropole.
Unterseen, the uppermost city on the River Aare, is known for its town beautiful square dating back to the 14th century. A short wlak from the center of Interlaken or over one of the many Aare bridges brings you across to the «Stedtli» as it is called by the locals. The boardesr of Unterseen reach from the Aare to Lake Thun and back towards the river Lombach on the north.
There ar many beautiful walks in Unterseen with magestic views of the Jungfrau Region and it also boasts the most sun in the Valley.
